Malibran Rediscovered: The First Diva

Dokumentarfilm TV | Michael Sturminger | 2008
This unique film follows Cecilia Bartoli as she pays tribute to her predecessor, the legendary singer Maria Malibran – the first female superstar in music history, muse to composers, and adored public goddess of Romanticism. In an exciting journey to the places where Maria Malibran lived and performed, the film tells the story of this extraordinary artist and Bartolis fascination for her. Born 1808 in Paris, educated by her father Manuel Garcia, an opera singer and composer himself, Maria Malibran became not only a megastar all over Europe but also in America. She died at the peak of her career, due to a spectacular riding accident, at the early age of 29 in Manchester. We follow Cecilia Bartoli as she researches the life of Malibran and the rich treasury of music associated with her and find out that the two divas have a great deal in common. The film includes arias and songs associated with Maria Malibran performed by Bartoli, filmed at the Maria recording sessions in Switzerland, including rare backstage footage.
