Dokumentarfilm | Mario Hainzl | 2017
A journey along the coast of West Africa: from Morocco via the Western Sahara to Mauritania, on to Senegal and Gambia and as far as to the border of Guinea-Bissau. The focus of this documentary are the stories and the life of the West African coast dwellers as well as of the European travelers, who are discovering the coastal region as a destination.

The constant reference to surfing serves as the link between the cultures. As an imported leisure concept, surfing has been slowly taking over even such remote areas as Western Africa and thereby expressing a change that is visible in many forms: the awakening of youth cultures, the rise of generational conflicts, the conquest of individualism and the advent of Western values in the primarily Islamic cultures of Western Africa.

Surfing becomes the connection between viewers and protagonists - a bridge set in front of a background of different ways of life. The route from Morocco to the very South of Senegal has not been chosen at random. It spans from hill country to steppe, from desert to jungle; from the Arabic-Islamic culture of Morocco to a very African twist on the Islamic lifestyle in Senegal and through to a Christian and Animistic, partially matriarchal, way of life in communities of Southern Senegal.
